Artist Statement
Ian Fleming has had a lifelong passion for the earthy blues sounds that emanated from the ‘Deep South’ of America. Those sounds, whether sung or played, involve flattening chords and bending notes out of shape when compared with the standard harmonic progressions common in most musical genres. …as a child Fleming’s early experiences of music were religious (not the ‘Black Gospel’ variety) but involved being hit on the knuckles with a wooden ruler for getting it ‘wrong’! Fleming is possibly best known his focus and isolation of small ‘unimportant’ details in landscape paintings of islands, sea, and rocks – encouraging the viewer to reconsider the value judgements we make about what is important. The works included in this ‘compositions’ exhibition also make reference to frozen moments and small details in musical performance – accidental marks or perhaps …question marks.
