Artist Statement for Compositions Exhibition

Working collaboratively with her singer songwriter husband, Paul Kane, Lesley Cherry has created an atmospheric film, set to her husband’s 1950's style song, titled Dadstar. The song was written after Lesley had created a piece of work titled Dadstar for a previous Creative Exchange project, in memory of her late father. Paul then took this title and composed the Dadstar song. Lesley comments, 'My father grew up in 1950's Belfast and was influenced by Americana style, rock and roll and the big crooners of the day like Roy Orbison and Tony Bennett, as well as Aretha Franklin and various Motown groups. His taste in music was ecliptic, much like my own. As a young man he travelled to see many of these American stars play in Dance Halls in the Province.' Dadstar shows the 1950's influence not only through the style of song, but also through the costume and lighting which makes the film look like a Tretchikoff print come to life. The atmospheric and haunting tune complements this deeply personal piece of work.
