About Creative Exchange 

Creative Exchange was established by a group of artists in East Belfast in 1996 and in the intervening years has contributed to the history, culture, economy and creativity of its locality.

 

Aims:

Creative Exchange seeks to provide affordable working space for the artistic community, particularly in East Belfast, whilst providing a programme of opportunities for artists to prioritise their practice, develop professionally, engage with communities, raise both individual and collective profiles, and contribute to the sectoral infrastructure in East Belfast and beyond – regionally, nationally and internationally.

Creative Exchange is funded by Arts Council of Northern Ireland. The organisation is a member of Arts & Business Northern Ireland. Creative Exchange Artists' Studios is a registered charity: 101590.

Who We Are

Creative Exchange Artists' Studios is managed by an active board, with activities supported and delivered by a Studio Administrator.

Studio Administrator

Deirdre Morrissey has extensive experience working as a curator and project manager for the last 10 years. Deirdre has been working Studio Administrator at Creative Exchange Artists’ Studios since 2015. Based between Belfast and Dublin, Deirdre also took up the position of Gallery Manager and Curator at MART in 2016 and also currently manages the events administration at MART.

 

She received a BA In Fine Art from DIT and an MA Vis in Visual Art Practices from DLIADT. 

 

Deirdre has also been involved in many offsite and independent projects and was awarded Dublin City Council’s Emerging Curator Award in 2011. Following the closure of The Market Studios, Deirdre moved to Belfast where she was a Co-director at Platform Arts from 2013- 2015.

Creative Exchange Board Members

Sophie Hayles, Chair is an experienced arts professional in the public and private sectors, as a project director, relationship manager, strategist and fundraiser. She currently works for the British Council as the Northern Ireland Manager for Creative Europe Desk UK. Prior to moving to Belfast in 2015, Sophie led on fundraising for a European Capital of Culture Programme in Aarhus, Denmark and was previously Strategic Relations Manager at Whitechapel Gallery, London. She joined Creative Exchange as a Board Member in January 2016, and in 2017 was shortlisted for Arts & Business NI Award Board Member of the Year. Other voluntary positions include member of the Northern Ireland Committee for Barnardo’s.

Jane Morrow, Secretary is an independent visual art curator with a specific interest in artist and organisational development. She is interested in infrastructure; working across gallery, studio and network contexts around formal and informal learning environments for artists. Jane has undertaken strategic, programming and fundraising roles for galleries, initiatives and individuals around the UK and Ireland and is now based in Northern Ireland. She has originated numerous exhibitions, commissions, learning projects, symposia, publications, opportunities, residencies, workshops and bespoke professional development programmes for individuals and groups, working with artists at all stages of their careers. Jane is currently developing a series of essays and reviews for all-Ireland visual arts publications. Jane also runs Avenue Artists’ B&B: a new residential initiative for artists visiting Belfast. 

Chris Fetherston, Treasurer, has been in the telecommunications industry since 2001. During this time, he has worked for large independents, blue chip companies and starts-ups, one of which he is now a Director and shareholder of Standard Utilities. He has gathered valuable experience and knowledge in aspects of sales, governance, operations and finance. Chris joined the board of Creative Exchange in 2017 following years working with arts organisations professionally and realising that his business experience could really add value as a board member. Outside of work, Chris enjoys walking with his dogs, holidays with his family and playing golf.
