Bernie Mc Adam graduated in 2019 with a BA Hons. Degree in Fine Art from Belfast School of Art in Ulster University. She also spent a year as an Erasmus student in the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb.
Themes of loss, memory and trauma explored through concepts of subjectivity of art theorist, Bracha Ettinger, form the basis of research for her recent work. Central to Ettinger's model of matrix and metamorphosis is an awareness of the primary compassion that emerges from the close prenatal proximity of mother and baby when we encounter traces of Others and integral to this theory is the matrixial gaze, a vehicle that transports impressions of events without witnesses and transports to witnesses who were not there.
Consideration of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, a cautionary tale of the danger of a misplaced
gaze and lack of empathy, is the reference point in creating a body of work that examines the
multiplicity of issues in contemporary society that relate to this tale, a society where the ubiquitous
gaze, as ongoing surveillance of our everyday lives, is all pervasive and relentless.
Bernie's practice encompasses oil painting, print and drawing, using a wide array of materials. She is
also a member of Creative Spark Print Studios, Dundalk.
